Players are placed on a map with no weapons to begin with. Numerous weapons and supplies are spread throughout the area. To improve their chances of survival and combat effectiveness, players must continually explore the map and gather these resources. The main objective is to remain the final survivor. Each match generally includes several players, who are scattered randomly across the map. As time passes, the safe zone progressively contracts, pushing players toward the center and making encounters more likely. Players must locate weapons and other supplies that boost their ability to survive.
